What is brake fade?
Definition, Types, & Causes
“Brake Fade” is when the braking system fails to slow or stop the
vehicle due to overheating in one or more of its parts. (It is not
caused by wear or mechanical failure.) This results in
unpredictable braking.
Brake fade can feel like the pedal is working, but the vehicle doesn’t slow down as expected. It can also fell like a “spongy” pedal. There are 3 types of brake fade.
Friction Fade
Friction fade is the most common type and can be called “pad fade.”
It is caused by the pad material starting to melt. It can happen if
you ride the brakes down a long hill, while hauling a heavy load,
or while racing.
Depending on the design, brake pads can stand temperatures up to 700°F - 1,200°F. Usually, the binder or resin melts first. This acts like a lubricant between the pad and rotor and reduces friction.
Friction fade often results in the pads and rotors being “glazed over.” When this happens, the parts are compromised and should be replaced.
Fluid Fade
Fluid fade happens when the brake fluid boils inside the system.
This can happen if the wrong type of fluid is used or when it gets
old.
Different fluids have different boiling points. They also absorb moisture over time. If it gets too hot, it creates vapor inside the hydraulic system. Unlike brake fluid, vapor will compress. This causes long pedal travel, “spongy” feel, and reduced stopping power.
To avoid fluid fade, make sure you use the right Type of Brake Fluid. Also, make sure your reservoir is properly filled and you change the fluid based on the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Green Fade
Green fade happens when the brake pads release gas trapped in the
material. This cushion of gas creates a “hydroplane” effect and
reduces friction.
Green fade used to be a much bigger issue than it is today. Modern materials and manufacturing techniques have reduced the gas content in brake pad material. However, it can still happen.
To avoid green fade, follow the Break-In Procedure recommended by the manufacturer.
